"...The average lifespan for an indoor cat is about 13 years. Of course, there are many cats that exceed the expectations, & it’s not unusual to hear of cats living into their late teens or early twenties.

...Here are a few cat health tips so you can maximize the time you have with your furry friend.

Feed Your Feline Wet Cat Food

Managing an appropriate diet is crucial to maintaining good cat health. Some cats are susceptible to becoming overweight when only offered dry food. Dry food contains a lot of carbohydrates, & unless your cat is very active, this puts them at risk of gaining weight.
When cats become obese, it increases the risk of diabetes, which is a life-threatening disease if left untreated. Consider switching your cat to canned diets that naturally contain more protein & fewer carbohydrates.
Cats are pure carnivores & need the protein in their diet. When you offer a canned diet, you also help your cat increase their water intake.
Encourage Water Consumption
Our domestic cats are descended from desert cats & are prone to drinking just enough water to function. However, as they age, the lower water intake places greater strain on their kidneys.
If you can encourage your cat to drink more water, it helps dilute their urine, leading to a lower risk of feline urinary tract disease. It also helps flush out more toxins from the kidneys.
Some cats are more likely to drink running water, so the use of a cat water fountain can be helpful. Some cats like to drink directly from the faucet. Provide at least 2 water bowls placed in different areas of the house to encourage your cat to drink more water.

Make Them Work for Their Meals

Keep your cat physically & mentally healthy by providing them with a puzzle toy. Cats living in the wild can spend up to 65% of their time hunting for food. An average 8 lbs. cat may eat 10 to 14 small, furry or feathered creatures to meet their daily caloric intake...
Our cats have their food presented in a cat bowl, which is not very mentally stimulating for them.  By providing food in puzzle toys or placing small amounts of cat food in small dishes that you disperse around your house, you provide more environmental enrichment...

Keep Your Cats Indoors

Outdoor only cats may live an average of 5-7 years. By keeping your cat indoors, you can potentially double your cat’s lifespan. Living indoors protects your cats from infectious diseases that other cats carry. It also keeps them safe from being hit by cars or attacked by larger predators, such as dogs & coyotes.
You can make your indoor cats lives more enriching by providing them with puzzle toys, daily play sessions, & cuddle time.

Yearly Physical Examinations

If you want a healthy cat, it is crucial to take your cats in for routine physical examinations, vaccinations, & bloodwork. One human year may be equal to 5 to 7 cat years. Since they age at a faster rate, yearly examinations & bloodwork can detect a problem early on, before it severely affects your cat’s physical condition.

Quality Bonding Time

Decreasing stress in your cat’s life by giving him individual attention & daily petting sessions improves his quality of his life. Offering your feline a cat perch, tall cat tree or even a cozy bed tucked in a hidden corner or an empty cardboard box, allows them to have places of their own to relax.
Improving the quality of your cat’s life by addressing his physical & mental needs can help your cat live a longer, happier life."

The First Rainbow Snake Since 1969 Spotted In Florida’s Ocala National Forest

“When it comes to diversity in wildlife, it’s hard to beat what Florida brings to the table. This includes a rather unusual snake, the rainbow snake, that has been spotted in the Ocala National Forest. This is the first sighting of a rainbow snake since 1969.

‘Rainbow snakes are highly-aquatic, spending most of their life hidden amongst aquatic vegetation; seldom seen, even by herpetologists, due to their cryptic habits,’ according to the Florida Fish & Wildlife Research Institute.

Some biologists feel that the snake, also known as the eel moccasin, found its way into the Ocala National Forest after the water levels changed in the Rodman reservoir.

The Reptiles Magazine article reported: ‘The rainbow snake, also known as the eel moccasin, is a non-venomous colubrid snake that is primarily aquatic & feeds on eels, frogs, tadpoles & other amphibians.

In addition to being a strong swimmer, the reptile is a proficient burrower as well. It grows to about 36-48 inches (91-122 cm) in length, with larger specimens reaching up to 66 inches (168 cm). They are said to inhabit tidal mud flats, creeks, lakes & marshes.”

Which Flowers & Plants Are Safe for Cats?

“...'While any plant material can cause mild stomach upset, some plants are much more dangerous,' says Tina Wismer, medical director at the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center.

It’s also important for cat parents to know that some plants & flowers that are relatively safe for dogs can be deadly for cats. 'Members of the Lilium (true lilies) or Hemerocallis (day lilies) can cause kidney failure in cats, but only mild stomach upset in dogs,' says Wismer.

If you’re considering an eco-conscious revamp of your home décor, check this list to find out which flowers & houseplants are safe for cats.

Flowers That Are Safe for Cats
Avoid bringing dangerous flowers into your home with this list of safe flowers for cats:
Alstroemeria
Asters
Freesia
Gerber Daisies
Liatris
Lisianthus
Orchid
Roses
Snapdragon
Statice
Sunflowers
Wax Flower (Madagascar Jasmine)

Air-Purifying Plants That Are Safe for Cats
Houseplants cleanse the air we breathe from toxins found in many household products—formaldehyde, benzene, & carbon monoxide, just to name a few.

Here are some air-purifying plants that are also safe for cats:
Areca Palm
Bamboo
Basil
Boston Fern
Cilantro
Dill
Dwarf Date Palm
Friendship Plant
Hens and Chicks
Lady Palm
Lemon Balm
Old Man Cactus
Painted Lady
Reed Palm
Rosemary
Sage
Shrimp Cactus
Spider Plant (Spider Ivy)
Venus Flytrap
Zebra Haworthia

Even Safe Plants Can Pose Dangers to Cats
Wismer suggests that you keep these plants & flowers out of reach of curious cats even though they are considered safe, because there are other dangers to watch out for.

Most cut flowers come with a powdered flower food to keep them fresh, & this can be toxic to cats. Even the vases could pose a problem. 'Cats especially like to drink from vases, so make sure the cat cannot overturn heavy vases & hurt themselves,' Wismer adds...

Karen Lawrence, director of The CFA Foundation & manager of the Feline Historical Museum, suggests using hanging planters as a way to keep plants out of the reach of your pets.
What to Do If Your Cat Eats a Plant That Might Be Poisonous
If your cat nibbled on a flower or plant, and you are unsure whether it may be toxic, call your emergency vet...

You should call even if you just suspect that your cat might have eaten part of a plant or flower."

Dull Meeting? No Prob-llama!

"Virtual meetings can be a slog, so why not invite a llama to crash your next remote work session? That's the thinking behind a California farm sanctuary's latest online offering...Sweet Farm launched its Goat 2 Meeting initiative, which lets you invite a llama, goat, cow, or other farm animal to your live video call.

The goal, says co-founder Nate Salpeter, is to provide some levity during the pandemic while raising awareness about the pitfalls of industrialized farming. 'After the coronavirus happened & shelter in place went into effect, we had to completely rethink the way we were driving revenue & executing our mission,' he told CNN.

THE 5 FLUFFIEST CAT BREEDS
“All cats are absolutely stunning in my opinion, but there is something so majestic & equally precious when it comes to those super fluffy kitty cats. Maine Coons should come as no surprise as one of the fluffiest cat breeds, but there are a few other that have earned their spots as the fluffiest cat breeds in the feline world…

Maine Coons
Majestic, striking, & oh-so-regal, the Maine Coon cat is a breed which is the first officially born & bred American cat breed. That super fluffy coat of theirs has helped this breed to withstand those chilly Maine temperatures…

The Maine Coon cat has a coat that looks much different in the summer than it does in the winter… The coat sheds almost like the cat is molting during the start of the warmer months. In the winter, their coats are fluffy, full, & just begging to be pet.

Persians
The Persian cat is by far one of the most easily recognizable of all the cat breeds. This ancient cat breed is also known as being one of the oldest of all cat breeds…These cats are all fluff, & most weigh in around the average cat size of 9 lbs.

These cats are reportedly known for being calm & sweet, with good cat manners, too. Many Persian cat owners report that their kitties prefer not to jump or climb. They are docile cats & require routine grooming to keep those fluffy & fine coats of theirs tangle free.

Norwegian Forest Cats
Did you know that these cats are also referred to as Viking cats? Vikings used to sail the high seas & were fond of bringing these skilled feline hunters along with them to kill the rodents onboard the ship. Norwegian Forest Cats, AKA Wedgies, have a thick, dense undercoat that has helped them to survive generations of harsh Scandinavian winters.

Matched with their superior hunting abilities, these large & in charge felines have a majestic coat that’s just begging to be pet. But what’s even cooler about that coat of theirs? It’s even waterproof!

Ragdolls
Ragdoll cats are super fluffy & oh-so-pretty! From those super soft & creamy coats to their striking blue eyes, the Ragdoll cat is a favorite among many cat lovers. If you’re curious as to how these gorgeous felines got their name, you’d know as soon as you held one in your arms. These big & fluffy kitties are known for going limp, & this makes them one of the most perfect lap cats of all…
                                               Maximus
Siberians
…Did you know that despite all of their gorgeous fur, they’re actually considered to be a hypoallergenic cat breed? This is because their bodies produce significantly less than average enzymes which trigger allergies in humans…

Siberian cats are playful & energetic, & also love to cuddle & aren’t known to be shy around strangers. For Siberians, they communicate loudly & often with their humans, as they are one of the most talkative cat breeds.”
